The Society for News Design awards the Stuttgarter Zeitung a silver medal and seven awards. The photo page in the weekend supplement of the StZ received an award.
Stuttgart – The look of the Stuttgarter Zeitung receives another award. In the global competition of the Society for News Design (SND), the jury was impressed by the photo page of the weekend supplement. "Motifs, perspectives and presentation are unique," is the verdict.
The experts particularly liked the page with the pictures by Spanish photographer Carlos Hernandez. The photos show athletes climbing on facades and bridges in Barcelona. With his photos, Hernandez, himself an avid climber, also wants to contribute to rethinking the use of public spaces. He prefers to look for buildings with sharp contours for his motifs. "I wanted to capture the dynamics and the powerful tension of the bodies, how they interact with things that weren’t designed to be climbed," says Hernandez. The black and white look increases the contrast between human muscle strength and steel or concrete. The reward for this page with the headline “City as a playground” in the photo page category: the first silver medal for the Stuttgarter Zeitung in this competition.
Several motifs awarded
The StZ photo page shows the entire spectrum of photography. Original picture series, optical experiments or photo reports have their place here. Another award in the Photo Pages category is the one that shows places in London and Liverpool where the Beatles lived and worked with 360-degree panoramic images. There are also two photo pages with unusual dog motifs. Other pages that receive an award show surprising perspectives, shapes and colors of rocks, motifs from microphotography and pictures of musicians from various blues bands. The compositions by the American photographer Christopher Boffoli are funny and original. He stages tiny plastic figurines with food. A woman mows an orange, workers inspect a hole in an egg or saw up beans. But Boffoli doesn’t just want to amuse with his arrangements. With his work, he also criticizes the superficial relationship to food, waste, XXL portions and ready-made meals.
